Kindergarten Admissions

Virtual Information Sessions for September 2021 Applications:

Thank you so much for your interest in Deer Lake School!
Our yearly tradition is to host a serious of open house events at our school, where families come by to visit our school, tour the facility with teachers and administrators, and learn about the things that make Deer Lake School a unique and special learning community.
With the effects of COVID-19, and for the health and safety of everyone, we have had to adjust the way we introduce families to our school. This year, our open house experience will be virtual.
First, we invite you to review our website in detail, including
  • Welcome to Deer Lake School, an Introduction to the DLS Family
  • various content relating to school life, philosophy and activities
  • Kindergarten Information Session: Beginning with the End in Mind Video (with Heather Gagnier, Kindergarten Teacher)

  • Attend a 40 Minute Zoom Live Q & A Session -if you missed our November 2020 Open House sessions, please email Gaileen Woytko, Director of Operations, to book your personal virtual Zoom information session. You will have an opportunity to ask questions about our school and better understand the application process.

Kindergarten application deadline was Jan. 22, 2021

Please note: Children can start kindergarten in September of the year they turn five years of age, under the Ministry of Education guidelines for the Province of British Columbia. That means they must turn age 5 before December 31st of the year in which they begin kindergarten.

STEP 1: Completed Application Forms Submitted to Deer Lake School

The Deer Lake School application form (a fillable PDF) is available on our school website, under Admissions.
Once you have completed the application form and all accompanying paperwork is assembled, please email to Mrs. Christina Luk, our office manager, at She will let you know if you are missing any documentation.
Original Documents with Translation Verified:  Please provide copies of your original documents, and if they are in a language other than English, documents need to be translated into English by a certified translation organization and verified by a notary public.
All original documents will need to be verified by the school at your interview in Step 3 or before a student begins school in September 2021.
Kindergarten application deadline is Jan. 22, 2021 for the upcoming September 2021-2022 school year admission.

STEP 2: Early-Learning Group Interview Sessions

Once a completed kindergarten application form has been submitted to the school, all applicants will be invited to register for a 30-minute group interview session that will take place in the Kindergarten classroom in groups of 5 or 6 children on Sunday, January 17.  Please note that time slots fill up quickly, and your preferred time may not be available:
  • 10:00-10:30 am

  • 11:00:-11:30 pm

  • 12:30-1:00 pm

  • 1:30-2:00 pm

  • 2:30-3:00 pm

Staff will wear masks and practice physical-distancing measures as much as possible, and all tables and supplies will be disinfected before and after each session. We strongly encourage students to come masked as well.  Parents will be invited to drop their students off via our enclosed Kindergarten outdoor patio entrance around the back of the school, and they may wait either in their car or under our outdoor canopies (weather permitting) during the session.
During the 30-minute session, children will complete teacher-directed tasks, engage in free-play, and have an opportunity to participate in Centre-Time. The Deer Lake School principal, elementary vice-principal and Kindergarten teacher will be present to spend time with and observe the children. These sessions will help us determine which students are ready for our kindergarten program.  Some of the skills assessed include gross motor skills, the ability to follow directions, social interaction and self-regulation.
Please note: If applicant families are unable to attend a group interview session on January 17th, admission to Deer Lake School in September will be conditional upon a 3-week observation period to determine the mutual best fit for both the child and our kindergarten program.

STEP 3: Personal Student Interviews and Assessments
Following the Early-Learning Group Interview Sessions, the school will contact student families to schedule an interview or to share reasons why admission may not be possible.
The 20-minute interview is with your child, accompanied by you as parents. It is hosted by the principal and vice-principal. Ideally, interviews would be in-person and physically distanced, but this will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis considering your family’s needs and general provincial health and safety directives at that time. Alternatively, the interviews will take place via Zoom.
The interview is an opportunity
1) for our administration to get to know you and your child
2) to understand your needs and expectations
3) to review our vision and philosophy of education with you
4) to address any specific questions you may have about our school at that time.
Based on the information shared in your application, the school may ask to conduct additional assessments of your child to determine readiness, any educational support services needed, or English language proficiency level.

Kindergarten interview appointments will be scheduled weekdays Feb. 1-12, 2021

STEP 4: Notification of Acceptance

Following your interview with the administrative team, parents will be notified by telephone with details of your child’s eligibility for the September 2021-2022 school year. Students will be accepted based on space and/or suitable program availability or placed on a wait-list.

Notification of acceptance will be not later than Feb. 19, 2021

The Kindergarten application deadline is Jan. 22, 2021 for the upcoming September 2021-2022 school year admission.
