Welcome to Kindergarten! I’m Mrs. Heather Gagnier and I’m very happy to be working our wonderful kindergarteners. Kindergarten is a big step for kids. It is their first introduction to formal education, and because of this, I want to make first impressions be positive and lasting. In our kindergarten
- every child is honoured for their individuality and the unique gifts they bring to the classroom
- attention is given to use of the most "brain friendly" practises. Learning styles are considered, healthy habits are encouraged, and a lot of movement and music is used for teaching and fun.
- emotional/social development is valued as much as academic accomplishments
- creativity and imagination is fostered through art, story and play exercises
- numbers and math sense is developed through hands-on activities
It is important to me that each child leaves my class knowing that they are valued and loved
- gifted with abilities that make them unique and special
- equipped with skills to resolve conflict
- prepared with foundational skills for grade 1
- loved by God who has a special plan for their lives
DLS is presently accepting applications for our September 2018 Kindergarten program. To download an Application Form please visit our Admissions page. We are hosting a Kindergarten Openhouse on Mon. Nov. 28, 2017, from 6-8 pm. Click here for more details.
Our Kindergarten program, Beginning with the End in Mind, is a full day program, and offers an innovative optional second year if parents and teachers in collaboration believe a child would benefit from an opportunity to mature another year before Grade 1. You can read about this exceptional optional second year program in The Gift of a Year.
To visit our kindergarten and tour our school, please call and book an appointment with Director of Operations Gaileen Woytko.

Welcome to Mr. Arthur Barrett's classroom! I have been a teacher in many parts of Canada and have been in BC for about 30 years. About 22 of those years have been here at Deer Lake in Grade 5. Some of my interests include reading, photography, learning to snowboard, and working with young people. I have two sons, one living in Victoria, and one here in Vancouver.
My goal for my students is that they become everything they can be. We will be spending some of our time this year learning how to become more self-directed and self-motivated. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be part of your child’s education this year!
